Confronting Racism in Healthcare, Past & Present

Join Healthcare is a Human Right Maryland for a dinner showing of POWER TO HEAL, a new PBS documentary about the untold story of how the implementation of Medicare was used to desegregate America's hospitals. Following the film, we will have a panel-led discussion about inequality in healthcare today and the movement for universal healthcare.

Our panelists:

Marvin "Doc" Cheatham is a long time civil rights leader from Baltimore. He works as a civil rights and election law consultant and is the president of the Matthew A. Henson Neighborhood Association. He is a past president of the Baltimore Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and a convener of the Maryland H.B.C.U. Matters Coalition.

Dr. Richard Bruno is a family physician who cares for uninsured people at a Federally-Qualified Health Center in Baltimore. He has served on the boards of Physicians for a National Health Program, the American Academy of Family Physicians, National Physicians Alliance, American Association of Public Health Physicians, MedChi the Maryland state medical society, Sugar Free Kids Maryland, Roland Park Civic League, Hampden Family Center, and Friends of Hampden School #55. 
Dr. Karen Kruse Thomas is the staff historian of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is the author of Deluxe Jim Crow: Civil Rights and American Health Policy, 1935–1954.
